A month ago, we had a lot more chickens than we do now ( a certain hawk is getting very creative in her hunting techniques), and the eggs piled up on baskets in the kitchen. As the big incubator was empty, on a whim - we threw them all in. Sixty plus eggs in all. That was exactly three weeks ago.
Well, starting a couple of days ago -those eggs started to hatch and hatch and hatch. There is a total of 36 chicks so far. These chicks are all a breed called Whiting True Blue, which lays a blue egg and are prolific layers - so finding homes for the extra chicks should not be a problem. Another chore on the list though. But baby chickens are the best.
I still have to build out the big chicken aviary. We have the coop - but getting the poultry netting and finishing the fencing (to resist fox and chicken hawk predation) keeps getting pushed back on the “to-do” list. Jill is getting pretty insistent that it needs to be done before our trip out to California next week. She is right - we really don’t want to lose any more birds.
We also have to install a new gate this weekend, so that our stallion Jade can be separated from the mares. Right now, he is in with three mares - but as they are pregnant and he is not, there has been a bit of a weight gain issue. Jade is a “big eater” - and his waistline is easily expanded… He is not going to like being separated from his mare herd, and he is really not going to like having his excess food cut. But there it is - life is hard. A healthy horse is a fit horse.
Today, we have to drive to Fredericksburg to attend an event in support of a true patriot, Cameron Hamilton, who is running for the Virginia Congress -7th district.

Funny, I feel a little reticent to be a first poster, there is responsibility in even that. I have been on a roll this morning, reading and looking at a lot of controversies, so this Fri. Funny hits the spot. Most were right on for me, and the chicks add a bit of humanity. Since you need to get those pesky chores done, see you later.
