Your and Jill’s love and knowledge of animals is infectious. I had hoped to live on a farm but it didn’t work out so I’m enjoying living it vicariously through you. Thanks!
Just wonderful! Thank you for sharing your world with us. Lyrical writing about beauty, freedom and love of nature. Plus total understanding of the plants and animals that fill your lives. Can’t wait for the next chapter.
Especially the way they did it, how can humans do that and then continue as though what they did was okay. I am no sentimental vegan. I am omnivorous, however, to kill a creature inhumanely like that is sick.
A perfect way to end my day, thank you for a visit to your beautiful homestead! Tho I must admit, if I heard that "drumming" sound outside my tent in the middle of the night, I'd be looking for my bear spray. I can only imagine giant dinosaurs walking about making noises like that...
I love reading your homestead news. I have always wished I could have lived and worked on a farm like yours. I have also owned and loved a beautiful quarter horse mare. Thank you for sharing. You write beautifully. I’ve also followed you since and through Covid. You are an amazing human Dr. Malone.
I love the tales from your homestead. It’s not lost on me that you clearly know that homesteading is a stance to truly be independent and grow our own food, to be NOT dependent on The Machine to supply it (with all its chronic disease issues).
If you ever want to breed your two mini cows, we have semen from minis and mid-minis, with genetics back to the Island. Even some semen in glass ampules from the 1940’s and 1950’s. We sell bulls, lease bulls and collect from our bulls. All pedigreed, many generations deep. A2A2 and polled (some homozygous and many heterozygous). Our whole herd of cows is on the smaller side in general with many in their teens. If interested, see ReverenceFarms.com
Yes! We have sexed semen from both Harold and Oscar. Harold is homozygous polled and is 1.5" taller than a mini but throws mini offspring. Oscar is also homozygous polled but is a mid-size who also has small off-spring, like 35-40 lbs at birth. They are both on the website and we have straws. Cowboy, the cutest cute of our guys who you just want to squeeze when you see him (just saw him today), has been collected, but not yet sexed. He's a true mini. He's not on the website yet. I think Substack has direct messaging, please feel free to be in touch. I think I could persuade Suzanne to lease Cowboy if you are interested in having a live little bull (he's hip high) for a bit if you're interested. He's really good natured.
When the world and it's people fail you and life is a constant stress, animals, trees and pastures make it all better....unless they are failing you or stressing you out hahaha. Just kidding of course, I love my little property in Australia.
Easy to make your own butter with flavours you like. Beat away until it solidifies and drain off the whey [ google] Add salt or flavours and put some in the fridge and the rest in the freezer in smaller lots No preservative so cant keep for too long in the fridge
What I am not thankful for is that the peacocks prefer the Ram truck and the farm vehicles as their favorite perch.
Peacock poo - is rather nasty stuff!

I guess you can probably be thankful you haven't got any goats then. Ha ha ha....
i put my foot down at goats...
Sir, I’ve never seen a peacock poo covered truck. Photos please and thank you!
Exactly! How does one know one poo from another?
Ugh.

Uplifting and encouraging, as usual. And may you and Jill and your sweet animals continue to live long and prosper. Take care, stay safe, stay free.
Thank you for the Emu story and farm update Dr. Malone, takes some of the sorrow off from losing the Ostriches up here in BC Canada.
That story about how they murdered all those perfectly healthy ostriches really stings.
That story about the Canada ostriches really broke my heart! Such a senseless act!

Emu love, who would've thought?
Reading your stories about life on the farm always gives me a warm and cozy feeling. Thank you for sharing with us.
Yes the cows are still cute. I’m so glad you found a mate for Gizmo. Joey is darling.
You got me at "who doesn't need two Emus"; flawless logic.

You both have gone to a great effort to keep Gizmo from wandering. You two are so thoughtful and caring, no wonder so many trust your instincts!
You are a wonderful writer, of such a joyful story Drs MALONE.

I will be in touch. Sexed semen?

They can do that?
Yes, by centrifugation. Nothing chemical.

Joey is just gorgeous! I used to carve emu eggs; their dark green outer shell and pale pink interior make a beautiful contrast.
I absolutely love following all the fun and games you have on your little farm. If I remember correctly, it is not all that big is it?
I have been having fun making Kefir! It is SO yummy! I don't think I am ready to step up to yogurt, yet LOL
Have you tried the Kimchi?
no, I am not a "spicy thing" fan but once I get the Kefir down, I'm going to give kraut a try!
I love homemade sauerkraut, but I haven't made it in a while.
My husband makes fabulous yogurt in our instant pot!!
