Thank God that the Virginia Supreme Court nullified the totally illegal, unconstitutional, political redistricting maneuver that Gov. 'Scamberger' and the Democrat legislature tried to shove down our throats prior to the midterm elections. There is divine justice.

Naive, perhaps, but some of these districts are laughable. A national framework is needed, but, as your article makes clear, self-interested politicians stand in the way.

Because as long as one party gerrymanders the other had to. And this is nothing new. The population of Okla. was 55% dem/45% rep when statehood declared (1906?). Dems won 1st election and gerrymandered such that 4 districts dem, 1 was split and 1 rep. Stayed that was until 1960s when the fed imposed and forced redistricting.
What about a national template: a map population within 10% of the ideal with the squarest, and thus shortest perimeter. A 4x4 square has 16 square units and a perimeter of 16, while a 16x1 rectangle has 16 square units and a perimeter of 34, like Doggett's district from South Austin to San Antonio. Use rivers, creeks and county lines where possible for boundaries.
Perhaps this would be a (finally) good use for AI: Define apolitical criteria and see what it comes up with. Then ask AI to compare its results with current boundaries and ask why one model is better than the other.
AI is biased according to the whims of the coder and/or the company. Example: I asked for the 100 greatest discoveries/achievements in western civilization from 1500-present. Instead AI gave a lecture on how western civilization draws from Asian, Aztec, and Islamic civilizations (in the case of the latter, exactly what contributions has it made? None obvious, and the usual credit for algebra is inaccurate, as it originated in ancient Babylon and Egypt, and in any case, is earlier than 1500.) Every encounter with AI has resulted in inaccuracies, sloppy or unreliable sources, incorrect conclusions based on little evidence, and occasionally, outright lies. So ask AI if you want, but be prepared for an answer written by a socialist.

It wouldn't be as big an issue if the partisan divide wasn't bigger than it ever was. The number of voters that will cross party lines to vote for the other party's candidate is almost non-existent. "Independents" are also mostly people who will always vote right or left that don't want the label and don't like their own party even though they will almost always vote that way.
I have voted 3rd party whenever possible. People accuse me of wasting my vote, but how am I the one wasting my vote when everyone else votes for the lesser of two terrible candidates? I realize Trump was a different situation in that he had a great deal of genuine support, but I also know a lot of people who voted for him simply because they were sick of the Democrats and found their candidate to be so much worse. The two major parties have a lock on elections, they control the rules, they make it almost impossible for 3rd parties to make any headway due to more onerous rules about getting on ballots, which is why it's extremely difficult to get a 3rd party candidate elected nationally. Both parties have been essentially pushing the exact same policies no matter what their campaign rhetoric might be, and they end up agreeing with each other on far more consequential issues than most people seem to realize. Sure, things like abortion and gender and religion they are miles apart. But what about the economy, corporate influence over our institutions, for example? Are they really that different? Trump seems to be as does his supporters, so that is a nice change, but there are still Republicans in office (far too many) that are still supporting the old system and going against the President from their own party. Until 3rd parties become viable, a lot of people in America are never going to get the representation they want. Just my opinion.

In MD we've had a long and ongoing forever and on redistricting charade. At this point our Presidential wannabe is aiming for party points maneuvering to rid us of our only R Freedom Caucus leader. Our Courts are colluding in the effort. In our case despite all the faults, it sounds like the duplicitous wording will get on the Nov ballot for a vote.
I come out of a Richard J Daly Chicago. Maryland has proven no better. Having never been an activist Democrat, beyond being aggravated, I've quite given up. I go vote just to demonstrate there are those of us who disagree.
Gerrymandering leaves out the type of people who will be represented. Kansas, like other states has a diverse group of people.
Western Kansas is sparsely populated with farmers and ranchers. While agriculture is carried out throughout the state, northeast and the Wichita areas are dominated by industries having a much higher population.
The rural areas are usually more conservative than the industrial areas, often having different morals and values and way of life in general.
When lines are redrawn by population it leaves out or ignores the smaller population. That is until election year.
And here we are. Our political gods casting dice on the lives of the people from Mount Olympus D.C. Forty Trillion Dollars National debt. Can't wait to wee what the next Forty Trillion brings us.
