Why would anyone respond to another person(s) thrusting a supposed study into his hands and then "interviewing" him about it? My immediate reaction would be, "WTF?!"
Suppose they had posted, for a few months prior, on X or Truth their spurious claim? Likely, most might be interested and willing to believe it, but unwilling to up-vote it without the evidence. Nevertheless, the seed would have been sown. Then these two well-dressed young men show up at this conference with a bogus study demonstrating the link you already suspected due to the on-line posts. Wanting to help, but pressed for time, you quickly glance through the fake report and affirm what it says for their camera.
The game they were playing did not depend on fooling most of the people most of the time; the goal was simply to fool just a few for a very short time. If you have never said anything stupid in your life, you are probably safe from predators like these two scammers. As for people like me, who frequently say stupid things, we are at risk.
Disgusting! Made up data to embarrass those who know the truth. Creepy guys. Good warning not to endorse something you know nothing about just because it supports your view.

No doubt these are early examples of an escalating strategies to shred our ranks.

This just goes to show me that without data and the smarts to see through the deception, people are easy targets. This sort of problem is facilitated by an often neglected part of the scientific process--reproducibility. Peer review is useful; but, is also a form of "group think". A couple of public examples come immediately to mind--"cold fusion" and "superwater". These were of some interest to me as a chemist. I also had two significant problems of my own, and was aware of another prominent such issue occurring within a major University project. In my own first case, I was making small lab batches of an experimental polyester using conventional "transesterification" process but getting unusually high molecular weights. I did this routinely for a few months, and then handed if off to a new chemist who also did it successfully for months (it was being used as an analytical tool for purity of our semi-commercial diester being supplied to another major company development group). Suddenly, the new chemist was unable to achieve the high molecular weights. He was sent back for "retraining" and I found that I could no longer do it either. This despite still having all of my original materials and equipment. The issue was never resolved. In a second case, I developed a process to make a specific synthetic oil that had special properties of interest. It was scaled up to multi-gallon levels successfully, then suddenly failed. In this case, the issue turned out to be co-catalyst development due to a specific level of water in the polar solvent which was within product specifications but which variation happened to be critical to my process.
The current environment encourages rush to publication, and reproducibility is not practiced much because it involves the the same effort as the original work with none of the boost to reputation.
Had a boss pushing me hard to publish data I presented at a meeting but I had reservations. Finally determined the "result" we were seeing was caused by the antibody we got from NCS had a contaminating response to a second antigen other than the one it was raised to. Oops..
Real research has quite a few "oops" moments, for a variety of reasons. However, the things that don't work as expected are sometimes the real breakthroughs.
Preemptively, shouldn't every effort be made to expose them widely as propagandists and provocateurs? We see that RFK is hemmed in by the conspiracy within and is not fighting that situation very successfully (or at least, not apparently). Surely there is more that can be done to fight the conspiracy without. I used the C word twice there, not as theoretical, but as recognition.
