I went to Gorham Christian School instead of public school. I then attended a great books program at Magdalen College in New Hampshire. When I attended the University of New Hampshire to study for a masters and PhD in biophysics, my advisor who graded on a curve, had to remove me from the curve to avoid reducing everyone else’s grades excessively. Also, after attending the biochemistry graduate lab course, I rewrote and computer edited the lab course manual. My edited version was used for the next seven years.
I taught at Magdalen for 17 years. Many graduates went on to teach. Many went to various graduate schools in science, law, medicine as well as philosophy and theology.
But when Magdalen changed and I left, I was “unqualified” to teach in highschool because I was not “certified.”
Until education finds a way to be based on performance and character instead of politics, students will be treated like cattle instead of human beings.
37 years as a full-time career firefighter where I held and served in every rank, last three years of chief of the department, and I am not qualified (certified) to teach prospective firefighter recruits. Common sense is lacking in our educational and social systems. Somehow the lack of college degree and “certification” automatically disqualifies capable, experienced individuals.
College degree not the ticket. Only education courses. There were/are bunches of retired scientists who could not teach in colleges or hi schools because of that lack. Been there.
Hey Jack, I was just at a Coos County Republican Committee picnic with New Hampshire governor Kelly Ayotte speaking. She recently approved a million dollar bill to build a fire-fighting training facility in the very rural north country. Small towns cannot afford full time fire-fighters, so need to train lots of volunteers. Maybe an open minded person like governor Ayotte would let you teach.
NH like many other states has established rules for certification and hiring. It would most likely require a rule change, such as credit for experience in lieu of certification or grandfathering into certification persons who came into the system before the certification system’s implementation. I doubt the Governor would bypass the present rules, if she even has that authority as governor.
Like. Determining one’s qualifications based on a sheet of paper, framed or not, is an invitation to fraud and error, and should never be a sole method of assessing one’s capabilities. Your résumé of experience, David, provides a far better example of your qualifications. I can’t help but believe that your lack of certification they said you lacked, was really an excuse they found convenient to reject you based upon a completely different set of qualifiers, probably more related to their political or religious bias. If our educational system were functioning properly, we would not have fallen from the best ranking country to the worst.
My personal “come to Jesus” moment was about 20 years ago when I was invited to watch a 17 year old Amish school teacher with his first graders. Mind you, he had 27 kids in grades 1-8 daily. But, because I was a reading specialist, he wanted advice for his 7 first graders. He masterfully handled the entire class, gave exactly what was needed and proved to my mind that my double Masters in Education was superfluous. And the kicker was that this community never hires anyone with a “degree” to teach. They assign the job to community members who aren’t otherwise occupied!!!! Kids are clever, read, write, do math and speak two languages all better than age mates from public school. It was a humbling experience but a good one. Changed me for the better.

She said it was the machine on the refrigerator. We read to her from a large mother goose nursery rhyme book, and he "read" to her little sister at first by seeing the picture and saying the memorized rhyme. But we had a little machine on the fridge that had plastic letters and hidden codes. When the letter was pressed into the holder, the machine would sing a little song: "B says bu, b says bu, every letter makes a sound, b says bu. The vowels would say two sounds, "A says ah, or ah says aye, every letter makes a sound, A says ah, or Aye." At first the children used the machine for a timer to race around the house. But one day, we noticed M reading to her sister R for real. We asked her how she learned. She said she was impatient waiting until after mass to know the words to new songs, so she wanted to learn to read. She said the machine told her that every letter makes a sound, and then since the nursery rhyme book had the letters and she knew the words by heart and by the pictures: easy peasy as Dr. Who would say. Younger sister R did not want to be left behind, so M taught R how to read before her kindergarten year. M read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy when she was 8 years old, though it did take a year. But she read the Silmarillion when she was 9 in less than a year.
Children are all geniuses when it comes to language. Maria Montessori knew it. When they are ready and given appropriate circumstances, they learn. But they learn best on their own time and their own motivations.

Maria Montessori knew over 100 years ago that cursive writing was easier to teach than printing because the natural movement of the hand is flowing rather than abstract geometric figures. Stupid, abstract, professors, who over-think everything and love their own ideas more than reality, thought the "elements" of writing were semicircles, straight lines, and intersections. But Maria Montessori observed children scientifically and found they needed to train their senses, then their motor skills, and then learn to write cursive.
That education programs propagate dumb ideas is proven by how poor education has become. Children left alone can do better.
I homeschooled my two youngest children from 8th grade through high school. They, now as parents are homeschooling their children. The most important lesson to teach a child is the ability to teach oneself. Throughout history many of the greatest minds and contributors to the arts, sciences and society schooled themselves. Sadly today almost all well-paying employment opportunities require a college degree. The trades, such as plumbers, electricians and surveyors also require hours and hours of classroom attendance along with years of work experience as an apprentice. Self taught knowledge and skills are not recognized for licensing.

Instead of a department store of information for sale, Barr and Buchanan though college should be like a medical clinic that cured the twin diseases of ignorance and stupidity with good food and exercise. The exercise was math and science labs where the answer is truth or an accurate predicted observation of a well designed experiment, not an opinion in the back of the book. I had a PhD from the College of Hard knocks. But when I returned home with 2 children & no job prospects, I was told I simply had to have a College degree. I did go on to get a BS from one of my state's big 10 Universities. Later after retiring from the Military I returned home again. Made the rounds looking for work. I was "Overqualified".
College Prof's were good, bad & mediocre. Sadly I think too many good ones retired, died or were forced out. Sigh.

When I look at what’s been happening in the countries of “the west” I must say it’s very scary times. I can’t help but believe that your lack of certification they said you lacked, was really an excuse they found convenient to reject you based upon a completely different set of qualifiers, probably more related to their political or religious bias. If our educational system were functioning properly, we would not have fallen from the best ranking country to the worst.

My personal “come to Jesus” moment was about 20 years ago when I was invited to watch a 17 year old Amish school teacher with his first graders. Mind you, he had 27 kids in grades 1-8 daily. But, because I was a reading specialist, he wanted advice for his 7 first graders. He masterfully handled the entire class, gave exactly what was needed and proved to my mind that my double Masters in Education was superfluous. And the kicker was that this community never hires anyone with a “degree” to teach. They assign the job to community members who aren’t otherwise occupied!!!! Kids are clever, read, write, do math and speak two languages all better than age mates from public school. It was a humbling experience but a good one. Changed me for the better.
We had decided to homeschool our children and were a bit worried about teaching them how to read at a young age. However, before kindergarten age, my daughter M taught herself how to read. She said it was the machine on the refrigerator. We read to her from a large mother goose nursery rhyme book, and he "read" to her little sister at first by seeing the picture and saying the memorized rhyme. But we had a little machine on the fridge that had plastic letters and hidden codes. When the letter was pressed into the holder, the machine would sing a little song: "B says bu, b says bu, every letter makes a sound, b says bu. The vowels would say two sounds, "A says ah, or ah says aye, every letter makes a sound, A says ah, or Aye." At first the children used the machine for a timer to race around the house. But one day, we noticed M reading to her sister R for real. We asked her how she learned. She said she was impatient waiting until after mass to know the words to new songs, so she wanted to learn to read. She said the machine told her that every letter makes a sound, and then since the nursery rhyme book had the letters and she knew the words by heart and by the pictures: easy peasy as Dr. Who would say. Younger sister R did not want to be left behind, so M taught R how to read before her kindergarten year. M read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy when she was 8 years old, though it did take a year. But she read the Silmarillion when she was 9 in less than a year.
Children are all geniuses when it comes to language. Maria Montessori knew it. When they are ready and given appropriate circumstances, they learn. But they learn best on their own time and their own motivations.
The legislature in New Hampshire defeated a law that would ban teaching cursive writing in public schools because "for modern children, it is too hard." Maria Montessori knew over 100 years ago that cursive writing was easier to teach than printing because the natural movement of the hand is flowing rather than abstract geometric figures. Stupid, abstract, professors, who over-think everything and love their own ideas more than reality, thought the "elements" of writing were semicircles, straight lines, and intersections. But Maria Montessori observed children scientifically and found they needed to train their senses, then their motor skills, and then learn to write cursive.
That education programs propagate dumb ideas is proven by how poor education has become. Children left alone can do better.
I homeschooled my two youngest children from 8th grade through high school. They, now as parents are homeschooling their children. The most important lesson to teach a child is the ability to teach oneself. Throughout history many of the greatest minds and contributors to the arts, sciences and society schooled themselves. Sadly today almost all well-paying employment opportunities require a college degree. The trades, such as plumbers, electricians and surveyors also require hours and hours of classroom attendance along with years of work experience as an apprentice. Self taught knowledge and skills are not recognized for licensing.
Thanks so much for sharing. Public education has stupid-ized children while claiming to “leave no child behind” and screaming about how teachers are overworked and underpaid! They are overpaid for what most do poorly and way too many are totally left behind. Example: I hired a high school graduate with a diploma who didn’t read a single book in her last three years, didn’t know how to open a bank account, and didn’t know you had to turn a drill on to make it work. I finally had to fire her because she had no skills. And my job didn’t require anything an ordinary person wouldn’t already know if they weren’t comatose for most of their life.
What is true for primary and secondary school, is also true for colleges. Stringfellow Barr and Scott Buchanan started the great book program at St. John's College. Instead of a department store of information for sale, Barr and Buchanan though college should be like a medical clinic that cured the twin diseases of ignorance and stupidity with good food and exercise. The good food was the great books. The exercise was math and science labs where the answer is truth or an accurate predicted observation of a well designed experiment, not an opinion in the back of the book. Stringfellow Barr's book "Purely Academic" lampoons American Universities before lampooning became popular.

I had a PhD from the College of Hard knocks. But when I returned home with 2 children & no job prospects, I was told I simply had to have a College degree. I did go on to get a BS from one of my state's big 10 Universities. Later after retiring from the Military I returned home again. Made the rounds looking for work. I was "Overqualified".
College Prof's were good, bad & mediocre. Sadly I think too many good ones retired, died or were forced out. Sigh.

When I look at what’s been happening in the countries of “the west” I must say it’s very scary times. There is a connection with this shutdown which is the complete capitulation of the entire left to not only allow the invasion of America but make the citizens pay for it. Activist judge is something we see increasingly in the medium and it strikes me as being an oxymoron. The adjective is a synonym for bias. Any judgement made on bias is not judgemental but pure activism. Therefore these decisions are declarations belonging to other branches of the gov It is axiomatic that all these activist judges are of the progressive bent since their very name means to progress away from the original Constitution towards a more progressive version. And that is why conservative judges cannot be called activist because, again, the word conservative refers to conserving the very essence of our Constitution...the bulwark of our legal system. So what it boils down to is that our judicial branch is essentially bicameral, made up of judges and activists and the activists need to go away.
The idea of Justice being blind has now morphed into, "Who appointed this judge?"
Or worse, labeled a Biden judge or a Clinton judge or an Obama judge. I’ll never forget Sotomayor years ago proudly proclaiming herself an activist judge.
So now it’s a matter of what’s really important. Color. But it’s not static. Red can blend into purple, but blue just gets bluer.
