Each year, it seemed there were a couple of hantavirus deaths and it made us more diligent about making sure our horses' feed room remained as rodent-free as possible. I agree this information is being used as a bioterrorist weapon.
Over the years we had a large cat, a passionately dedicated Jack Russell and a mutt named Gator who lived for rodent kills. The feed room and barn stayed pretty clean. I didn't mention the areas flagged for hantavirus contamination were usually old sheds and barns. We did wear masks when sweeping floors due to the dust, which could potentially contain mouse urine. Nobody got sick.
We sprayed the area with a mist of diluted Clorox to dampen the dust and help neutralize of the virus. This is not a new discovery. Just a new media rag.
The best mouser I ever had was a 110 lb. wolfdog. I had caught a mouse in a trap and as I was taking it out, the mouse dropped on the floor.
