Our garden has yielded nothing to write home about this season. I’ve noticed a severe lack of bees this year and it’s been depressing. We don’t have a large garden by any means as our property is tiny but out usuall yields have been more than the wife and me can eat. Not this year! Think bees are a nuisance? Getting stung hurts? Not having them will devastate our food supply. If I had the property I would have our own hives. 2 more years!
We have had a bee tree out in our open space area (not super close to our home) for years. I love to walk down there and watch them so busy, in and out, back and forth. I think that is why I have bees for my area. Just recently walked down there again and voila` they have colonized a new tree down a bit from the original. Bee condos!
Only thing that is irksome....For years they've been there with no one the wiser. Now, all of a sudden, the rec center that owns the land has put up all kinds of yellow tape and warning signs. Why do so many entities think they have to control every situation. All they've done is alert everyone to come over and bother the inhabitants. 30 years and NOW we MUST be WARNED. Sigh.
Bees! We have had a hive on and off in our 94 yr old house since we bought it 42 yrs ago. Tried killing them off, failed, now we tolerate each other, and I expect we get the benefit of their pollenation. But this year I noticed them swarming around a different location, so may have to make some changes. I have a friend who is a beekeeper; he brought an old hive box i've set up near the house. He doubted it would lure them away, but won't hurt anything. We also had a massive swarm trying to get into the house the last couple of days. Many got in, but died within a few hours. They looked a bit long in abdomen to me, wondered if they are drones looking for a queen. Anyway bees have been a mixed blessing for us. Thankfully they have been very docile. Maybe one sting a year. Unfortunately, we can't get to any honey, tho, don't want to tear off the siding!
Love reading you and Thomas Sowell. Kindred spirits. Rural veterinary practice is like rural medicine nowadays. Kids like the puppies and kitties and think its all snuggles until they hit the corporatized practice world. And they love the gen Z (or whatever letter) life of the big city most grew up in….and they come out of veterinary medical school up to their ears in debt. My wife and I went through school as the enemy in Lyndon Johnson’s war on poverty and survived until retirement. It was great and we survived. Wanted to practice on horses. Treated everything from mice to elephants until being put out to pasture. It’d be a treat to see your place. Loving your book(s). Page 34 inspired me to write.

I think I found out about him through Turning Point and got the book Unhumans: The Secret History of Communist Revolutions (and How to Crush Them). WOW I looked him up and he is called everything under the sun.. wikipedia.. doing a Google search. I had no idea he was that young. so smart.. and a friend of Charlie Kick's too.. It worked for me. :)

Every time he has Malone on, he has to have him slow down because Bannon knows A TON, but biomedical sciences are not in his wheelhouse. Investment banking, domestic and foreign policy, history from any time period, and the Catholic Church are in his wheelhouse. He is the only one who predicted we would get a Francis 10.0 as Pope. He didn't offer the name but several weeks before the Conclave he appeared on a show and said it would be a dark horse candidate that no one would be familiar with but that the Cardinal elected would try to portray himself as sympathetic to the Traditional Church but would be way more radical than Bergoglio. He comes up with the best terms too. He calls it Corporate Catholic Church.
OMG, if there was an Olympic event for keeping the largest number of plates in the air you two would definitely be on the podium! ( my mind is on podiums because the 2026 Aachen FEI championships are happening this week). My dad used to say “ when you want something done, ask a busy man”. You are proof of that maxim.

I feel like a pretender after reading about all the work you guys have. I thought I was busy with my garden but it’s nothing g compared to what you describe! God Bless!!
Love all the pictures! We had a mild winter and a cold Spring. All the fruit trees blossoms froze . No one has any fruit on their fruit trees. Then it hit hot temperatures . We had a lot of raspberries on in our raspberry patch. The heat burned the raspberries on the vine so no raspberries. We planted our garden but with the cold Spring our seeds wouldn’t germinate. We thought it was bad seed so we planted more. The green beans finally came up. We just pick our crop last week. The peas did well but came on while we were out of town. Our corn is looking good, our tomatoes are starting to ripen. We made and canned tomato soup last week and used some of our green peppers . Soooo good. We freeze dried some soup. We are deciding between canning salsa or spaghetti sauce next. Our squash is just starting to get blossoms. Everything is so late because of the cold spring. Our carrots are growing and we harvest them in Oct.
A funny story. We have some beautiful flowers in our pots on the front porch. Somehow a tomato plant ended up in one our pots and is starting to bloom. We have no idea how it got there.
Grow a garden or fill a pot or window box with homegrown food. It is so satisfying.
I look forward to hearing the results of the great garlic experiment. My good friend grows garlic and gifted me a large shopping bag of it. I have pickled garlic in white wine vinegar in the fridge, a bit of minced garlic in olive oil in the freezer, and several (many) mason jars of whole cloves in both the kitchen freezer and the garage freezer. I just put the whole cloves, unpeeled, in the jars. The skin peels right off very easilty after freezing.

My wife plants lots of flowers that attract bees and butterflies. I think it really helps out.
I have noticed less honeybees over the past few years. Lots of bumblebees though.

Absence of bees noted by my husband this year also. Yields adequate, but not same as in past years.

LC, freezing the garlic doesn't affect their texture?
