Great analysis. To make it simple, we subsidize the Defense industry and give $3.3bn in equipment to Israel. We do this because Israel serves our interests in the region. Latest example is Israel using their equipment and ours in bombing Iran in preparation of Epic Fury which otherwise would have been impossible. Another example is Israel destroying Hezbollah allowing the US to claim peace making in Lebanon.
Problem occurs when the US injects our other interests in the region. Rafah is very good example. Kamala “read the map.” In fact, she prevented Israel from finishing the job. The same thing in 2025 when my President told Israel to stand down. Clearly, the motivation was different but the result was the same. But in this case, there probably was a grand plan that led to Epic Fury, I assume so, different motivational indeed. In Harris case it was plain obstruction, here it was planning. But it remains that as long as we “give” Israel a few billions in equipment, they remain our satellite. And the perverse consequence is that it requires that we maintain the concept of US boots on the ground.
In other words, if Israel was “simply” buying $3bn from us, and was self-sufficient, we would have zero say. But we would still need Israel to defend our interests. The dependency would be reversed. I'm really puzzled by the approach here. It appears the Malones are talking about the section in the NDAA currently under debate that would integrate Israeli military and intelligence into our own. It has been very clear in the discussion I have heard that this will remove any of that activity from Congressional oversight, and will in an ongoing sense make it increasingly difficult for that process to be reversed if later so desired. This with a country that has been long deemed an enemy by our own intelligence services. The measure has been characterized as unconstitutional and even a treasonous threat to the Republic. How it is possible for two insightful people, who have demonstrated that insight time and again, to get heavily into details and lose sight of the overarching issue here is hard for me to figure.

As I understand it, the shift from aid (subject to Congressional votes and thus theoretically to control by American citizens) to administrative details in the DoW would put any input outside the purview of Americans (who do you call in the Pentagon?). And because that can be decentralized over endless contracts and procurement arrangements, there's no maximum on it. There's the further problem of data fusion and network integration. As I understand it, there is no clear definition of these terms, and it sounds oddly like Israel will have access to information that in the past subjected those who did it to espionage trial and conviction (and ultimately release and a hero's welcome in Israel). I can't see this as anything but a surrender of sovereignty, which would seem to be an anathema to the philosophy of the Malones. (Again, I have tremendous respect for them; I just don't understand this.)

To answer your first concern, Congress doesn't lose all control (unless they screw up and forfeit it), but control shifts from intl affairs comittees to national defense comittees. As to the "integration" concern, i think it is pretty ovbious that Israel has moved from client state to relative equal in some measures (not raw $$, power, etc but in engineering/defense capabilities) and they want the relationship to reflect that. I for one hope that this changes our paradigms from geewhiz tech$$$$ to practical warfare tools for which Israel is famous. All that tech hasn't won us any wars since ww2, though i admit the most basic reason for that is lack of our leaders' will to finish the job. When there are no more rockets and launchers in Iran, they won't endanger hormuze shipping. If Israel helps us with our will that will also be a benefit. The 2024 flex was a real expenditure (I wonder how well calculated) of a scarce asset. It bought short-term influence and domestic breathing room at the price of speeding Israel’s exit from the pure-grant dependency that made the asset so clean. What Biden did (and Trump has continued) is to highlight what should have been obvious to both parties all the time. The supply of your weapons is control of your policies. It applies to policies other than warfare. Israel has a fundamental problem: they do not have a large enough economy and population to sustain the military that is necessary to their survival. In my opinion, they have the technical, intellectual, and motivation (looking in the mirror here) for survival. Their political fragmentation (looking in the mirror again) works against them. If I am correct in my judgment that they do not have the economic and population prowess to be completely independent, the obvious solution for them is to diversify their supply sources. That is an uncomfortable solution for the USA as well as for Israel--i.e. it fundamentally changes the leverage. That is what I would do in their situation.

These essays have been SO informative! It occurred to me, while reading this, that it’s likely most of our elected representatives do NOT understand these current relationships! Thank you for unveiling this complicated system.
Great analysis. To make it simple, we subsidize the Defense industry and give $3.3bn in equipment to Israel. We do this because Israel serves our interests in the region. Latest example is Israel using their equipment and ours in bombing Iran in preparation of Epic Fury which otherwise would have been impossible. Another example is Israel destroying Hezbollah allowing the US to claim peace making in Lebanon.
Problem occurs when the US injects our other interests in the region. Rafah is very good example. Kamala “read the map.” In fact, she prevented Israel from finishing the job. The same thing in 2025 when my President told Israel to stand down. Clearly, the motivation was different but the result was the same. But in this case, there probably was a grand plan that led to Epic Fury, I assume so, different motivational indeed. In Harris case it was plain obstruction, here it was planning. But it remains that as long as we “give” Israel a few billions in equipment, they remain our satellite. And the perverse consequence is that it requires that we maintain the concept of US boots on the ground.
In other words, if Israel was “simply” buying $3bn from us, and was self-sufficient, we would have zero say. But we would still need Israel to defend our interests. The dependency would be reversed. Much like what is happening with Ukraine and its drone industry. We are now asking for their help. Ironic.

Below are two books, that provide sufficient evidence of Israel's human rights violations and provide historical evidence that your assessments in this series need to be re-examined. Luring people you define as an enemy into attacking you is a time honored military tactic. They attack and you spring the trap which wreaks devastating losses on them while incurring only minor ones on yourself. Remember, that since WWII and the firebombing of German and Japanese cities, America and its allies there is no distinction between military and civilian personnel. Today, Israel military forces target Palestinian famine victims at food distribution points run by the UN and other aid groups. Current estimates of those killed in this manner must be close to over two thousand.
War is not the answer, unless you are willing to accept the spiritual harm to yourself of eradicating your enemies.

It is fascinating to see those who continually repeat reports of "human rights violations" by Israel in defending against a group whose every action is a human rights violation as if those likely unavoidable actions invalidate Israel's soverignty, military actions or goals.
Hamas: hijacks aid trucks soon as they pass border, kills anyone who protests or tries to "steal" the aid, then sells it to palistinians. DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The U.N. food agency accused Israel of using tanks, snipers and other weapons to fire on a crowd of Palestinians seeking food aid, in what the territory's Health Ministry said was one of the deadliest days for aid-seekers in over 21 months of war.

The World Food Program in a statement Sunday condemned the violence that erupted in northern Gaza as Palestinians tried to reach a convoy of trucks carrying food. The Health Ministry in Gaza said at least 80 people were killed in the incident. The Israeli military has said it fired warning shots "to remove an immediate threat," but has questioned the death toll reported by the Palestinians.
The accusation by a major aid agency that has had generally good working relations with Israel builds on descriptions by witnesses and others, who also said Israel opened fire on the crowd.
The bloodshed surrounding aid access highlights the increasingly precarious situation for people in Gaza who have been desperately seeking out food and other assistance, as the war that has roiled the region shows no signs of ending. Israel and Hamas are still engaged in ceasefire talks, but there appears to be no breakthrough and it's not clear whether any truce would bring the war to a lasting halt.
As the talks proceed, the death toll in the war-ravaged territory has climbed to more than 59,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Its count doesn't distinguish between militants and civilians but the ministry says more than half of the dead are women and children. The ministry is part of the Hamas government, but the U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.
Israel has meanwhile widened its evacuation orders for the territory to include an area that has been somewhat less hard-hit than others, indicating a new battleground may be opening up and squeezing Palestinians into ever tinier stretches of Gaza.
WFP condemns violence at food distribution points
In northern Gaza on Sunday, the Health Ministry, witnesses and a U.N. official said Israeli forces opened fire toward crowds who tried to get food from a 25-truck convoy that had entered the hard-hit area.
The WFP statement, which said the crowd surrounding its convoy "came under fire from Israeli tanks, snipers and other gunfire," backs up those claims. The statement did not specify a death toll, saying only the incident resulted in the loss of "countless lives."
After Sunday's incident, a photographer cooperating with The Associated Press counted 31 bodies at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City and 20 others in the courtyard of Sheikh Radwan clinic.
"These people were simply trying to access food to feed themselves and their families on the brink of starvation," it said, adding that the incident occurred despite assurances from Israeli authorities that aid delivery would improve. Part of those assurances, it said, was that armed forces would not be present nor engage along aid routes.
"Shootings near humanitarian missions, convoys and food distributions must stop immediately."

I'm really puzzled by the approach here. It appears the Malones are talking about the section in the NDAA currently under debate that would integrate Israeli military and intelligence into our own. It has been very clear in the discussion I have heard that this will remove any of that activity from Congressional oversight, and will in an ongoing sense make it increasingly difficult for that process to be reversed if later so desired. This with a country that has been long deemed an enemy by our own intelligence services. The measure has been characterized as unconstitutional and even a treasonous threat to the Republic. How it is possible for two insightful people, who have demonstrated that insight time and again, to get heavily into details and lose sight of the overarching issue here is hard for me to figure.

As I understand it, the shift from aid (subject to Congressional votes and thus theoretically to control by American citizens) to administrative details in the DoW would put any input outside the purview of Americans (who do you call in the Pentagon?). And because that can be decentralized over endless contracts and procurement arrangements, there's no maximum on it. There's the further problem of data fusion and network integration. As I understand it, there is no clear definition of these terms, and it sounds oddly like Israel will have access to information that in the past subjected those who did it to espionage trial and conviction (and ultimately release and a hero's welcome in Israel). I can't see this as anything but a surrender of sovereignty, which would seem to be an anathema to the philosophy of the Malones. (Again, I have tremendous respect for them; I just don't understand this.)
Plus, they'll have access to intelligence including all surveillance on Americans.

To answer your first concern, Congress doesn't lose all control (unless they screw up and forfeit it), but control shifts from intl affairs comittees to national defense comittees. As to the "integration" concern, i think it is pretty ovbious that Israel has moved from client state to relative equal in some measures (not raw $$, power, etc but in engineering/defense capabilities) and they want the relationship to reflect that. I for one hope that this changes our paradigms from geewhiz tech$$$$ to practical warfare tools for which Israel is famous. All that tech hasn't won us any wars since ww2, though i admit the most basic reason for that is lack of our leaders' will to finish the job. When there are no more rockets and launchers in Iran, they won't endanger hormuze shipping. If Israel helps us with our will that will also be a benefit. I *think* (and perhaps am wrong) that the point here is that aspects of foreign aid are often discussed in detail in Congress, but the thousands of DoW procurement instances are not. Congress doesn't get involved in that. Not that it couldn't, but that — for all kinds of reasons — they don't. And the Pentagon is notorious for its opacity, and the fact that it has NEVER had a successful audit. ---- In terms of "not finishing things," you are apparently unaware of the fact that we have used virtually all of the defensive missiles and a large part of the offensive missiles available in that theater (and, to an extent, in the Asia/Pacific theater from which missiles have been borrowed). It is clear to everyone watching this clear-headedly that the Iranians have the capability to make missiles in large numbers, of an increasing technical capability, and that we have been unable to knock out a significant proportion of their underground launchers. We don't dare go near the Gulf, and I'm sure the Chinese are enjoying watching us disable ourselves for any future conflict. We *can't* "finish" this, and the longer we persist in not reaching an agreement, the worse the economic disaster for us and the rest of the world will be when strategic reserves (particularly of heavy/sour crude for diesel/aviation) run out and remaining supplies become prohibitively expensive.
We have hardly ever put constraints on the enormous aid we've given Israel for over 70 yrs, and hence our country is totally responsible for the indecent way that govt and their supporters have been treating the rest of the population in the middle east, including many many Christians. The new arrangements continue our aid and take away any way we might have had in the past over how they use it. I, for one. strongly object to all of the unconditional support we've given them, let alone the new arrangements in which our hands are tied. It's one more example, like the covid mandates, of how our "representatives" don't actually care what their constituents want or need.

Sickening how the worst times for humanity are the best times for the military-industrial complex. War and high-intensity conflict create the throughput they need—munitions get expended, stocks must be refilled, factories stay humming, and profits soar. Burning through bombs and munitions is the business model.
The 2024 flex was a real expenditure (I wonder how well calculated) of a scarce asset. It bought short-term influence and domestic breathing room at the price of speeding Israel’s exit from the pure-grant dependency that made the asset so clean. The U.S. system appears to have judged that the resulting structural adjustment will make the new equilibrium still heavily tilted in its favor. Whether that judgment proves correct remains to be seen I guess.
It reminds me of my situation where my neighbour owns a piece of property, a 10 ft wide piece of land he lets me cross to access the lake. We've been friends a long time and I'm easy to lend him a hand whenever or lend him a tool etc. but he's discovered our politics don't align and he's lately been storing equipment in my path sending a clear message . . . the path exists at his pleasure. My wife’s instinct to sell is the rational response to that demonstrated vulnerability — remove the dependency rather than keep living under a potential veto. Yeah, I remember a neighbor in Illinois that was friendly until I wanted to put up a fence to keep my dogs in. She was all in, ready to pay for half, until she found out the survey put my boundary 6 feet into what she thought was hers. She wanted me to get (and pay for) a new survey, and when I refused, the cost was all mine and don't set one toe onto her property while the fence goes up.
What Biden did (and Trump has continued) is to highlight what should have been obvious to both parties all the time. The supply of your weapons is control of your policies. It applies to policies other than warfare. Israel has a fundamental problem: they do not have a large enough economy and population to sustain the military that is necessary to their survival. In my opinion, they have the technical, intellectual, and motivation (looking in the mirror here) for survival. Their political fragmentation (looking in the mirror again) works against them. If I am correct in my judgment that they do not have the economic and population prowess to be completely independent, the obvious solution for them is to diversify their supply sources. That is an uncomfortable solution for the USA as well as for Israel--i.e. it fundamentally changes the leverage. That is what I would do in their situation.
