Today, for the first time, all my emails from 'alternative' sources, like this and many more, have come with a spam warning. Another example of nudging. At least I can click "looks safe".

Carla Nelson's avatar

Me too!!! Just changed all of my Substack subscriptions from gmail to startmail.

SashaSue's avatar

Thanks for saying Startmail - looking into it now.

LB (Little Birdie)'s avatar

No such warning in Hotmail (Outlook) which is related to Microsoft, I believe. Of course, I usually open on my desktop using Duck Duck Go rather than Microsoft Edge. Hmmm.

Jean's avatar

Recept warning

Not allowed to reply?

I have Gmail but don't use it. AOL and BasicISP didn't warn me.

The use of tactics to persuade decisions has always been in place. If a person isn't drawn to understanding their psyche and others in return, the uneducated won't see the writing on the wall. When I am faced with what I perceive as inaccurate information, esp. emotional/mental, I start resourcing information about the topic to assist me in understanding the dynamic. Most people get uncomfortable (maybe) and read the newspaper and T.V. at the same time...or eat, drink to an excess, sexual release, or any number of unhealthy choices. I read these pieces of pertinent information from you and others, because of my "wanting to know how I and others tick". Thank you for the opportunity to learn!

SashaSue's avatar

I am the same way and I am usually always saying "What are they up to?" and start digging using tools like DuckDuckGo. I totally distrust Microsoft and Google.

I also use the ton of books I have on Spiritual and psychological approaches, when my questioning is personal.

SashaSue's avatar

One of the things I do is pray and listen and usually I know what is right and what is wrong. An inner voice I totally trust.

D D's avatar

That was what I did; ask and listen inside, about the jab. I was "told" to wait. As I waited I found Dr. Malone and a few other truth tellers.

LibertyAffair's avatar

Very interesting Dr. Malone. I don't think people are equally subject to these attempts at manipulation. Without critical thinking skills an individual is toast. With critical thinking skills, particularly if enhanced by lateral thinking skills, you've got a fighting chance. Regardless, making people aware of what is being attempted is a necessary first step to fighting back.

I have studied behavior analysis and believe that the scientific study of behavior is very powerful. While simple in it's principles it is much more complicated in analysis. An intelligent person can understand and manage behavior in people (all animals actually) and the more that the person understands the complexity of the contingencies the more effective at managing behavioral outcomes. A fear of mine has been the rise in artificial intelligence and the use of it in behavior management. I suspect it could lead to an invisible tyranny almost impossible to defend against.

brooker's avatar

Yes, probably already happening.

D D's avatar

Probably?

“Propaganda” - Edward Bernays 1928

“…laid the foundation of modern public relations and defined common techniques to manipulate popular opinion. Hill understood that any traditional campaign would fail to sway society, which perceived advertising as little more than corporate propaganda. Effective public relations required comprehensive off-stage management of the media. At its best, it left no fingerprints.”

“…he (Bernays) leveraged the hidden irrational forces inside human beings based on the book by his uncle Sigmund Freud; he wanted to make money manipulating the unconscious; you have to look at things that play to peoples irrational emotions; shift America from a needs to a desire country; train the public to desire something new before the old has been entirely consumed; man's desires must overshadow his needs; you don't buy things to express your needs, you buy things to express the inner sense of yourself to others; banks created department stores to propagandize products for profit “ - The Century of the Self documentary

AI is taking this to another level.

"The concept emerged from behavioral economics—popularized by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein’s Nudge (2008)—which argued that human decision‑making is heavily shaped by context, defaults, and emotional triggers rather than rational calculation."

Fun fact: Sunstein is married to former USAID administrator Samantha Power, whose talent for deception strikes me as exceptional.

Greetings from Michigan's Thumb Coast, where it is very very cold. Our dog, a hunting breed who uses her nose to wander about, now runs out to do what needs to be done, then dashes back in. That is cold. As to the current topic, first a resounding cheer to Dr. Jill and Dr. Robert for continuing to pursue their illumination of topics that others refuse to address. Shining light into dark places dismantles fear and - at the very least - outlines what lurks in darkness. At the age of 54 (long ago and far away) - I completed my undergraduate degree at a small liberal arts college. The ratio of students to professors a small number - about 10 to 1. The intent of the school was to teach beyond subject matter and foster critical thinking! Each course concluded with a 1 to 1 interview an hour long, following the submission of an original paper which was defended during the interview! Decades later, the multiple exercises of critical thinking are still paying dividends! There is no doubt in my mind that my signing on to Dr. Malone's Substack - and those of several others who refuse to be silent - as well as the titles of books I order are tracked by data collectors. AMEN! Until my light fades, I will continue to listen, discuss, read, and draw my self- formed conclusions and speak of my thoughts, findings, and opinions - if any! Rath De Ort!

-1F right now with a high or 3F. We'll hit 11F tomorrow.

Why do people follow narratives that are "unthinkable" or make no sense to the rest of us?

For some folks they flip the usual statement of "Why would I do that?" to "Why wouldn't I do that?

Drugs and use of same in ridiculous quantities and combinations is a popular flip. A normal person uses drugs when absolutely required. The "other" people, those that say "Why not?" think we are the stupid ones.

For others the alternative, such as voting for or supporting Pres. Trump, is so repulsive that they will embrace ANYTHING that is the opposite of Trump. No matter how bizarre or outlandish.

The situation in MN is a great example. The bad actors were acting BADLY well before ICE showed up. Who in their right mind wants criminals living in the neighborhood if said criminals can be easily removed and deported? But somehow the MSM, Walz, Frey , etc., have convinced (or at least enlisted) a large segment of the population to echo that ICE and Police are the problem? Billions in fraud are OK? Some how taking over an airport in subzero cold is a good idea? Thinking there would be zero consequences for running over cops? Don Lemon not getting arrested and his co-defendants being released by a libtard judge? Go interrupt mosque and see what happens!

The Insurrection Act is close. Our psychotic overlords and their minions on the left WANT massive civil unrest so they can nudge us into a civil war. Invoking the Insurrection Act is the lesser of evils. Letting the left control actions is a bad idea.

LB (Little Birdie)'s avatar

Maybe some clothing saying "Have you been Nudged?" or "I'm a Nudge Resister" or "Ha, Ha, You Can't Nudge Me! Would that wake up some sleepy headed conformists? Something to Think About!!!??

SashaSue's avatar

Only the Un-nudged would understand LOL

LB (Little Birdie)'s avatar

But some might get curious enough to look into the whys and wherefores. Everyone counts in the battle for right reform.

SashaSue's avatar

Maybe but I am doubtful but then again I do admit a bit of a negative attitude towards the sheeple. A fault of mine to be sure.

Jim Toscas's avatar

Excellent description of "nudge" psychology (never heard it called that). But "nudge" is part of a bigger system of manipulation.

Critical thinking is essential in a democratic society; it allows voters to make intelligent choices. But a person who has developed critical thinking skills is also less susceptible to being "nudged." It is therefore no accident that our current primary public education curriculum has been stripped of this item— teaching kids what to think, not how to think.

Lack of critical thinking ability manifests itself as (among other things) the inability to foresee the consequences of a given action, particularly if those consequences are long-term. Ever wonder how (it seems) half of American voters favor policies and politicians that would ultimately dismantle our nation and our way of life— but these same voters truly believe that it is the OTHER HALF that seeks to do so? I sometimes think there's an epidemic of mental illness in this country.

SashaSue's avatar

An epidemic of lack of critical thinking skills thus herds of sheeple I do believe.

Micheal Nash, Ph. D.'s avatar

When in the Air Force we were encouraged to ignore "rumors and propaganda"...a subtle hint to only believe fact based information. Wonder if they still do that? Because it introduces a healthy dose of scepticism into ones thinking process and it seems to me scepticism is the best way to combat this psycho intrusion by the USG

LB (Little Birdie)'s avatar

I've been accused of being a 'negative' thinker because I DO question so much. That's how easily/badly this nudging can produce 'mass thinkers'. D D is right (in my eyes), skepticism is in the eye of the beholder. It's becoming increasingly difficult to weigh truth vs propaganda. A person really has to dig. Most don't. Seems most people's 'skepticism' is the majority vote.

SashaSue's avatar

All my work colleagues think I am utterly eccentric/wacky because I do not play along and question everything. I am one of the very few that did not follow the Covid guidelines and still working. I am really surprised I am still with the company but to be honest I will be happy to leave (retire), working with such sheeple is so very hard.

Rick Farmer's avatar

At one level, skepticism may be in the eye of the beholder,” but at another level it is absolutely essential to the process of critical thinking and recognition of the ways we are being manipulated. In my mind, it is now obvious that anything that comes from the government, the legacy media and NGOSs is unlikely to be accurate and unbiased.

D D's avatar

I know people who are skeptical of all the wrong actions. Skepticism doesn't lead to wisdom, in my experience, Micheal.

Micheal Nash, Ph. D.'s avatar

Guess we have to disagree....again.

D D's avatar

You don't know people who are skeptical of known truths, defined by data?

Julia Pomeroy's avatar

BUT if you don't watch the news from the msm, if you don't go onto social media, if you have learnt how to think critically, then the 'nudges' won't nudge you. On top of which should you happen to be a Christian who studies the word of God (the Bible) on a very regular basis, your mind will be filled with truth and not lies and you will be a lot harder to deceive.

It also helps if you live in a country whose language is so difficult that I have found at my great age it is impossible to learn, that helps too!

Great article and everything in it is important for everyone to know. Struggling with how to make this into a video presentation that you could get people to watch.

SashaSue's avatar

Ask AI to create a video and see what happens - just kidding...sort of. Now I am thinking about it. Wonder what Grok would do with it.

Melanie Reynolds's avatar

What causes a person to follow the narrative and what causes a person to critically think for themselves?

I see people blindly following all the crazy talk and believing it. They get into such a panic they become irrational while other people can sit back and analyze information and then study it out before making a decision. What makes the difference between the two sides?

SashaSue's avatar

I think most people like to follow the herd and worry about being left out. Being a lone wolf type of person has given me the blessing of looking at things critically and not caring if I am left out of the herd.

Melanie Reynolds's avatar

I see people actually getting totally fearful of Trump. They are frightened. It is crazy. They watch main stream news and believe every word.

SashaSue's avatar

It is so bizarre but then again I do not watch MSM news at all and haven't since the first of Covid when they ran the death ticker. I knew right then that pys-op was going on.

It is utterly wacko to be so fearful. Maybe being that fearful of Fauci would make more sense *wink wink*

Lets not forget the effect of "subliminal" programming. T.V., radio, and all forms of audio have the capacity to subliminally influence our responses! It's been used for decades.

Dr. Robert W. Malone's avatar

The BBC are masters of Nudge

D D's avatar

I bought and used "subliminal tapes" to play at night while my son was sleeping , to influence his response to certain life situations!

SashaSue's avatar

Did it work? I tried subliminal stop smoking tapes years and years ago and all it did was cause me smoke even more.

Those of us who are accomplished analysts are very well aware of the "Nudge" process, because we would never become "accomplished analysts" unless we were COMPLETELY aware of it and thus capable of defending ourselves from being corrupted by it~! This really is an excellent article from Dr. Malone and well worth reading and fully understanding. In fact, if ALL Americans read this information and/or took a seminar that correctly revealed the "Nudge" process of brainwashing and the underhanded social engineering that it REALLY is, Americans would win the majority of their freedom and rights literally overnight~! It is very true that Obama was a total nightmare for America, however he was never Intelligent enough to have had anything to do with this "Nudge" attack upon Americans freedom of independent thought, so it would be important to look beyond him for those who are really pulling all of the strings. The Criminals of Humanity "elite" are the globalist dictators and powers even above their high-profile ranks~! I too question why Executive Order #13707 is STILL in effect, however knowledge of the "Nudge" tyranny is the key to defeating it for ALL Americans who have the Intellectual capacity to do so. President Trump and the white hats may be waiting to kill E.O. #13707 when enough Americans are ready and able to understand it, but the criminals in the established media will NEVER let it go because they are guilty of treason and crimes against humanity that they ALL used "Nudge" technology to achieve~! This kind of VERY powerful technological advantage over the unsuspecting low-mentality (unintelligent) sheep is an extremely addictive power that the criminals in our society will never give up, so I would be in favor of making it criminally illegal and worthy of a "death sentence" for all of those who engage in deploying it~! If attacks upon Americans freedom of thought are not the height of criminal behavior, then we shall have no rights remaining in due time~!

Sincerely, Mike
