Corrin Strong (subscriber) asked an important question:

'and yet a number of deformed babies were born in this country. How did that happen?

So, I queried CHAT

"Why Thalidomide Still Harmed Babies in the U.S.'

The Answer:

1. “Clinical trials” distributed nearly 2.5 million tablets in the U.S.

Before the 1962 drug-safety reforms, companies were allowed to give out “investigational” drugs extremely loosely.

Richardson-Merrell, the U.S. distributor, mailed thalidomide samples to:

-More than 1,200 physicians

-Across 46 states

-Without proper oversight, consent rules, or pregnancy warnings

Doctors then gave these samples to patients—including many pregnant women—who believed they were receiving a safe, established drug.

Estimates vary, but around 20,000 people in the U.S. were given the drug this way, even though it was not approved for sale."
