Have never understood the compulsion for humane executions. Have merely complicated something much easier and more certain. Save the tears for the victims.

Have a French friend who explained to me how and why the guillotine came about as the most humane method of execution. It was during the French Revolution and “invented” by a doctor, Guillotin. The French did eventually end public executions due to the gruesome visual sight of guillotine execution, then did away with death penalty altogether. However, this is all to say that they already figured out that if you’re going to have the death penalty, death by guillotine was the fastest, most reliable, most humane method. So I asked him if he thought France still had some in storage…

Actually, france retired madam guillotine for a brief period, capital crime increased and they brought her back and the crimes diminished. Then france became too "civilized" for the death penalty. My argument to that attitude is it is needed until it is not and mankind is still a long way from that status

Personally, I prefer the Russian method. The prisoner would be walking along a corridor and someone would step out from behind the door and put a bullet into the base of his brain.

ME NEITHER no further comment.. on that one.. count me out of the human execution line. too damn gory for me to contemplate on a Rainy Sunday morning.. mouse mood black

I worked as a Superior Court clerk from 1981 until 2005. The reality of the death penalty is that they're likely to die of old age locked up in some lovely place like Pelican Bay, while the appeals process plays out. Might as well just impose life without parole.

"They" (whoever they are) want executions but are concerned that the public will reject the practice if it is seen for what it is: the taking of a human life by the state. So, make it nice and antiseptic, as they just go to sleep, or whatever.

I am opposed to the death penalty for a number of reasons. One very good one is that our justice system is not perfect, so innocent people can be, and have been, convicted of capital crimes. If you give them life without parole, and they are later found to be innocent, at least you can let them out of prison. But if you have executed them, there is no recourse--you have executed an innocent person. So there is that. Other moral arguments against execution can be made as well.

Therefore, I am not in favor of trying to disguise the nature of executions. I want people to know what we are doing when the justice system takes someone's life. Proven methods are hanging, the guillotine, and firing squads. Done properly, each is quick, brutal and effective. That is what execution is. Attempts to gloss it over and make it "acceptable" are hypocritical and introduce problems of their own.

I am with you. Executions reflect back on society's sense of itself. Would rather execution be eliminated and let it only be life imprisonment. Many will not agree with this but I think it matters if we want to advance society's basic moral sensitivity.

Life sentences have a nasty way of not being life sentences after all

Yes others inside determine a rightful ending such as that for Jeffrey Daimer, a horrifying individual who would cook and eat his victims. But that was more than mere murder obviously.

Micheal,

After one trip to Edinburgh where I saw "The Maiden" (the Scottish version of a Guillotine) in the Antiquities Museum. Later I learned that a several times great uncle, Sir Godfrey was the last person beheaded on the device and likely the reason I am American today. The stories are mixed, but he either shot a guy, who later died or was framed to take his land. Oddly on several visits I have stayed at a traditional British B&B in a flat within 100 yards of where this occurred. My immediate ancestor and the combined family left for Ulster where their ancestors had lived at times as they were otherwise coastal dwellers in the Fleet Bay Area of Galloway and were caught up in the Lowland Clearances of Scots immigrating from Ulster to the Philadelphia area and later the Appalachians. These ancestral occurrences have lead to me pondering Sir Godfrey's fate and at least it was quick and it is well documented that no one left the Maiden disabled for the rest of a miserable life.

The democrat party is overrun with hypocrites and liars. Based in lies, deception, racism and this constant state of being offended, which is done to quiet opposition, they should get what they deserve. These lies and deceits are meant to hide their real intentions while the MSM does their best to cover up the truth. Covid, forcing dangerous experimental injections into the arms of unwilling people, open borders, imprisoning protestors, including shooting and beating some to death, DEI, wokeness, hatred of groups based on religion, and not reporting what these candidates actually stand for will all come back with vengeance . If they lose this election, which they should, it will be by their own deceiving evil hands. Let’s pray enough people see through their deceptions. J.Goodrich

A great mix today! The political lawn signs made me laugh! I was just driving home from the market and was noticing the signs and did glance at a red one…. It’s was an old classmate that now sells real estate 😂😂

To heck with yard signs. Dems here putting up billboards!!

MrsMc's avatar

I don't get out enough to know about billboards, but we don't have many Talarico yard signs.. yet.., not nearly the amount we had for Beto early on...I would guess 95% of the houses had Beto yard signs, every neighborhood in Austin. Some left their signs out for the next several years. So it makes me wonder.

Swabbie Robbie's avatar

I drove around the nearby lake yesterday. There was only 1 yard sign collection for the democrats, but that yard also had a Ukraine flag at the same height as the American flag. In town the I can identify the democrat yard signs are mainly in the yards of public school teachers. We live in a pretty red area but other elections definitely had more democrats putting up yard signs.

Maybe the Dems are ashamed due to the DSA/communists who are taking over their party!

Nah. They need people with guns living nearby. :-)

But we sure could learn a lot from them.

It is my understanding that there are Amish who go hunting in season, and they use guns to do it. (Correct me if I am wrong.)

Great bunch! I particularly liked the one about not giving up guns! The mouse video - I wish I had a camera on my rat as he was tearing leaves of my houseplants and eating the stems. The uncle reminded me of my husband with our nieces/ nephews and another use for Worcestershire the time he gave my 8 year old niece a teaspoon of it for hiccups - she trusted him before that. Loved the Amish - I love my Roman Catholic church who believe we received the fullness of the Faith, but as I get older I'm pretty sure it is the Amish who have It right. (we are all loved tho church or not). Thank you for putting this together ! Happy Sunday to all!

1) The chicken "back legs only" thing ... had to think about that for a sec!! 💡😂

2) Happy to see a healthy wee mouse after yesterday's pickled version. And the leg kick ... get outta here! 😍

3) I read somewhere that Tennessee once used a 3-drug cocktail for executions, but changed the protocol to pentobarbital alone, which (apparently) doesn't work as well. I'm remembering (or perhaps misremembering) that years ago, there were activist groups interfering with some of the supplies of "euthanasia" drugs destined for prisons. Seems this should be a hot topic for review by our prison systems, doesn't it?
