The 2026 Oslo Freedom Forum was held in Oslo from June 1–3, 2026. It was organized by the Human Rights Foundation and carried the theme “Dismantling Dictatorship.”
It’s probable that many of us had a grandfather or uncle that fought in Europe just 80 years ago to free country after country from an expanding authoritarian oppressive government. I can just imagine the millions and millions of Europeans at that time that were overwhelmed with joy on liberation day, knowing the repressive Nazi regime had been defeated and that people’s liberties and freedoms were to be restored.
For me the sacrifice made to free the Europeans was much closer than even a grandfather, it was my father. I remember when I was 16 my parents took 2 of us 4 kids on a real vacation for the first and only time. We went on a cruise to Bermuda. I remember seeing the scars on my father’s back and where the bullet exited his chest. I had no idea he would only live another 4 years from that trip.
I’ve talked to my brother several times about how depressing it is to watch Europe fall to communism as we think of the sacrifice our father gave for them and so many other great Americans gave. For us it was just one generation ago. For my brother and I we watch with sadness, it’s extremely hard to accept what’s happening to Europe.
It saddens me to read of the memories and the sacrifices made and feel the sadness. There can also be joy for the always recurring cycles of bravery and knowing the cycles require investment of the potential of the future light. Bravery is an envelope of vast proportions.
My husband (passed in 2007) was a bomber pilot who flew 18 missions over Germany.. He put his life on the line to defend freedom...and he would be appalled to know what is going on in the world today.
I was taught about the "salami slice" approach of the regulatory system early in my career. "It's just a little slice, look how thin it is", they say, and tell you about how much safer everyone will be if you just let it go.
"Turn around after several years of this", my mentor said, "and you'll see all of your salami on their plate, and nothing left of your sausage".
It's a pain in the ass to fight them at every step, but it's the only way to survive for the long term.
Americans seem to have very little awareness that the threat from Islam is not just on their doorstep- it's halfway down the hall but is still hardly mentioned especially in the MSM, yet it's the main cause of Europe's problems, especially their loss of freedoms. The more obvious the issue becomes, the less the public are allowed to talk about it and those that do so in a remotely critical way, end up in jail.

Yes, I watched Pavel's talk on X and I root for him almost as much as I root for Elon. Bright, hopeful lights in Western culture. I wish invisible cones of security existed for all you freedom-loving speakers since "genius envy" is more and more rearing its ugly head. (Since I'm a bona fide copy editor, I'd like to point out that all verbs, including the little ones like "is" and "are," are always capitalized in titles.) Also note, the Sunday and Friday strips help my psychology and help keep me in touch with those friends and loved ones who would appreciate these funnies. 🙋♀️❤️

I feel sorry for and pray for the UK, EU and Canada, have had patients from all of these countries. I listened to their personal stories. As a smart country boy from very rural Louisiana, I learned over decades. From being an Undergrad at MIT and UT Austin and Medical School in Shreveport Louisiana. As an Intern and Resident in LA area in Family Medicine. Then my working career in Silicon Valley. I always learned and grew as a Human. We, the USA, as the first colony to successfully rebel against the English Empire, founded a true Consitutional Republic/Democracy which was durable and flexible. We have made many mistakes in the ensuing 250 years, but slowly learned. I have learned a lot of history as well as Medicine in my 59 years. My Medical knowledge I give freely as I am retired with enough $. I still try to have Hope for Humanity.

I just returned from a wonderful supper with my 55 year old son who is conscious, genuine and intuitive as well as easily duped by the "suicidal empathy" paradigm. The only consolation I have is to know that genuine kindness and empathy is rewarded. If not here, on the other side. I know we exist beyond this life and are held accountable for our true intentions, both good and bad (to put it simply). There will be a reckoning for the hatred, greed and harm done, as well as a recognition for the care, concern and effort taken to uplift. That is what keeps me going in this challenging time; Love is stronger than Fear.

I actually have seen a "nudge" on this...It was during Biden's term. It looked like a telenovela inwhich The young woman's boyfriend was getting his implant that day so she would have to wait for him to come over after that. It was like the illegal immigrants were being implanted with a digital id/locator until they could be processed. It may have been on a Spanish station or maybe it was a feature story on a US channel, but it seems like it was stated the video came from some sort of thinktank brainstorming/idea session on how to deal with documenting and keeping track of the people coming across.
Here in the US this indeed could be the first step. That's all I know about that, but hopefully with Trump, and his friend Elon, this wont happen.

I've used Protonmail for a few years, much less invasive. Gmail is very invasive. If any app requires me to log in using a gmail, I simply do not use that app.

The Business Manager, whom we share with a Big City school south of here, touted the big-budget rewiring of the school for internet along with surveillance covering every inch. “We’ll have state of the art equipment for a great price.” No one — not kids, not teachers, and not visitors — will escape the prying eyes of the surveillance systems, which the superintendent can monitor from her phone at any time. The school board should not stand for this; yet no one (even those who agree with us) said anything!
The school also is swapping out its Chromebook for Apple laptops (for every child). How much privacy will those kids have? How much personal information must they and their parents reveal to access these computers?
We have been trying to meet with the school superintendent to discuss these and other issues for at least a month. So far, no go.
One more: Recently, our so-called conservative legislature passed online safety legislation to “protect the kids.” One conservative Senator spoke out against this as did we — for the same reasons Durov eloquently explained. But the bill passed anyway with more loopholes than a crocheted sweater; tech companies, kids and parents will find ways to bypass the onerous new law.
The rush toward competitive technology, “safety,” and censorship to prevent mis/disinformation is stealing everyone’s freedom and destroying America’s future as the last bastion of freedom. The US Constitution is an idea that is rapidly getting its lights punched as we approach our 250th anniversary. Ben Franklin, sadly, had it right: Trading safety for liberty will provide neither (paraphrasing).
