I think another culprit of magnesium depletion is soil. Our soils have been basically dead for a long time. Big Ag sprays and treats their soils with so much chemicals, it could be void of all minerals. Thank you again for such a great informative article. We appreciate you. :)
Absolutely correct. 2009 Dept of Agriculture chart documented this. If my memory serves me right, it was about 2 out of 3 Americans were deficient. Unfortunately, many supplements contain magnesium oxide which is poorly absorbed. My preference is magnesium glycinate. The chart listed over a dozen key nutrients and the amount of population deficient but did not list Vitamin D. More people are deficient in vitamin D than magnesium which is converted to the hormonal form in the body to control around 3000 gene expression when required. Medical profession overall still does not understand the true role of Vitamin D. If NIH would do blood tests on those with a specific disease status, it will become clear that disease states become less of a risk as the blood value of D becomes higher than the 20 ng's that NIH says is fine. NIH embraced the poor research of IOM in 2011 that created this false valuation. I maintain a blood value of 70 ng's and flu and colds are no where to be found. Same story with Covid. Risk of dying decreases with higher D blood values. Endocrinologists understand, but dermatologists do not.
Potassium is the mineral most Americans don't get enough of. Only 1% get the RDA and like magnesium serum levels are not an accurate indicator of total body content. It's the most abundant cation in the body involved in virtually every life process. It's the most neglected mineral and rarely mentioned.
Always great information to help us age healthy lives. Thanks Dr J.

Now let’s do iodine. More critical and much more deficient.
And deficiency may play a role in BPH

75 years old. Life-long vegetarian (lots of nuts and legumes!) Migraines for many years. Sumatriptan prescribed. Then.
This summer an assistant in a pharmacy in MT suggested I try adding Magnesium Glycinate.
I've gone from 2 or 3 Migraines a week to none in 3 months!!!
Why didn't my doctors tell me this? What a difference!
Now I take 240 mg a day plus "magnesium complete" (which doesn't include glycinate!)
Come to think of it...I'm not forgetting words like I was... Hmm!
I know. good article.
Thanks for the distillation!
