Crony capitalism or fascism seems to be the typical model by which politicians regulate the little guys right out of the market and then take their small slice of the massive pie, which I’m sure is annual. You notice they always use the end of the world fear to motivate the citizen to back regulation handing them, the politician, the keys to their corrupt regulations and donations. It’s the same play over and over again which leads to the same result. Big business and the politician get wealthy and the average guy and the middle class get stuck holding the (empty) bag.
I’ll tell you I don’t fear AI, I fear people like Bernie Sanders.
This "need to regulate AI" campaign has made me laugh. Even my poor memory remembers the several so-called "social media" goons like zucksuck, after they had been exposed and were being criticized for throttling and canceling their masters' enemies, and causing children to hurt and off themselves allegedly because of their "social media" use, saying they thought "social media" needed to be heavily regulated. Because THEY all had their companies set up and dominant in the market. It would not have done them well to have other upstart "social media" companies able to freely enter the market and compete with them.
The Left has found a new Impending Catastrophe. Mainstream communism collapsed, so the energy moved to Global Warming, which was rebranded "Climate Change" when the warming proved inconvenient, and which is now sliding onto the same scrapheap. The pattern holds: each claim goes intellectually bankrupt, and each is replaced by another just as irrational as the last.
The new bugaboo is runaway artificial intelligence — which will supposedly drain our water, wreck nature, destroy jobs, and finish by destroying humanity itself.
Watch the convergence as this campaign builds. Ask who benefits from the fear, and who benefits from slowing AI down. You'll find a strikingly diverse coalition forming around a single cause, each member there for a reason other than the one it professes.
Let's hope we don't have to spend an entire generation fighting them.
I believe I was a victim of the "test" mentioned in this essay. Recently, ATT would not port my phone number to the new Verizon account because I could not answer the security questions. The security questions were AI generated from a government data base with questions dating back 40-50 years. E.G.: I was supposed to know the birth month month of my ex-husbands niece. A man I've been divorced from for 53 years. I flunked that test. I had to wait 24 hours to take it again and flunked again because I did not know the current address of a woman I barely knew 43 years ago. Hours and hours on the phone trying to get ATT to use common sense with no resolution. The number never got ported. A number I've had for 19 years, ported from provider to provider with success until it hit the ATT AI barrier.
The writing is clearly on the wall. You've written quite a few essays about this phenomenon of regulation backfiring terribly and affecting the small business. There is another issue that has not been discussed in this debate but which is the likely driver. Open source AI from China has entered the US market and driven the cost of tokens down by more than 90%.

Just like the pharma regs provided liability immunity, AI regs can be skewed to release them from all harm that may occur in their use. Liability to cause harm is the only self-regulatory path.
Many fractions all Jockeying for control! Is the bottom line going to be replacing human labor with machine labor that functions 24 hours a day? Create some thing new of value at a lower cost. Automated auto factories only with maintenance men. Intel chip production is an example of full automation. Not 10 years of medical research, but within a day or two. Possibilities are endless. The behavior of those that are managing AI needs to be examined in detail. Am amazed at how quickly AI returns data in a structured way that is logical and accurate. . Most of the time. Yes, agreed, this is a blatantly obvious (messed up!) Psy Op. One factor not mentioned is that true open models ("Open AI" is not open, Elon left and they got greedy, betrayed the founding intention), by their changing, evolving, custom nature will be, as a practical matter, impossible to regulate. Darius, head of Anthropic, one of the two leading frontier models, the other being Open AI, has been begging for regulation. He is assured of regulatory capture and once regulation is accepted as necessary the open models will be deemed too dangerous and disallowed, leaving just a very expensive duopoly. That is his aim.
